Black Panther is definitely going to win! Lets begin with the story line. Its a tale of two sons: one the rightful king, T’challa and one with the courageousness to take over the thrown, Killmonger. Their homeland is Wakanda, the richest place on earth with purple herbs that can make you a superhuman. It is hidden by a camouflaging force field. Both men have their own definition of justice. T’challa is stuck in the ways of tradition and struggles at first to adapt. That burden caused him to temporarily loose his thrown to a cousin, Killmonger with a dream of conquering the world. Killmonger saw no reason to hide the greatness of his couture or people. In his eyes, it was time for payback, by any means necessary. Luckily, good won the fight for change. T’challa gained back his thrown and learned that change is necessary for growth. In the end, Wakanda went global, peacfully.
Culturally, Black Panther appealed to the Black community. The story reinforces the value of unity within the community. It gifted us with representation. Also, the infusion of black culture before and after slavery is a beautiful aesthetic the film offers. The film also featured unforgettable scenes like when Killmonger was dying and Tchalla said, “We can still heal you.” Then Killmonger replied, “Why so you can lock me up? Nah. Just Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, cause they knew death was better that bondage.” These were powerful words from such a powerful character.
The Cast was in a class of its own! Lupita Nyongo, Angela Bassett, and Michael B Jordan are people I love to see individually, but together it was gold. The movie also made lesser known actors household names. Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, and Chadwick Boseman are actors I need more of! They absolutely established themselves in this movie. Overall, the graphics were beautiful, the actors were amazing, and the writing is top notch.

I have not seen any of these movies, and I have only heard of two- Black Panther and A Star Is Born. I think that A Star Is Born would win the award for Best Pictures. The interaction between the main couple, on top of the amazing soundtrack (sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo_efYhYU2A), creates visionary scenes that represent the intense, thrilling storyline in the best way possible. The actors, Bradley Cooper, and Lady Gaga were amazing, accurately depicting the relationship between the characters in the 1937 version of the film. Overall, this movie empowers those that struggle in creating a career for themselves and encourages people to never give up.

  3. Ezra McWilliams says:

I have not watched most of these movies; however, I do love the Black Panther and hoped it received the best picture award. Overall, it was a great movie because I really enjoyed how it delved deep into the people and culture, specifically black people. It was very culturally uplifting, and I hope I get a chance to see more movies like this one.

Out of all these movies, I have only watched Black Panther. However, Black Panther broke records, and it was a fantastic movie as well. The first time watching this movie, my eyes could not leave the screen. I tried not to blink afraid of missing something. Out of all the super hero movies I have watched, Black Panther was the best. It brought out the little kid in me. I went around for at least two weeks saying, “Wakanda forever” and getting the same response in return was hilarious. I can tell that alot of time, effort, sweat, and dedication was put into making this movie. If Wakanda doesn’t win Best Picture, I will be shocked because it is a movie for all races, genders, and ages.

I have heard about most of these movies and all of them had good and bad reviews, to say what the Academy is going to choose is hard because they don’t only choose based on audience reaction but all the insides that most people don’t know or care about. So instead of saying I think will win, ill give my opinion on which one I liked the best. Blank Panther was amazing and was a revelation on how good an almost all African American cast can bring to the table and A Star Is Born is revolutionary with Lady Gaga’s performance. However, in my eyes, Bohemian Rhapsody did so well with all the emotions. It had me so bewildered and everything about it was good.

  6. Chloe Jackson says:

Honestly, I have never been interested in the Oscars. As a person of color, I make an effort to support organizations that support people that look like me and hashtags like #OscarsSoWhite don’t exactly help. In the words of Issa Rae, “I am rooting for everybody black.” So, if I have to pick a movie I am picking Black Panther (it is also the only movie on the list I have seen). With a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score Blank Panther broke the mold for representation and gave millions of children positive non-stereotypical roles that didn’t fall under the category of crackhead, drug dealer, or welfare queen. Not to mention that production quality was unbelievable.

I absolutely LOVED Black Panther. I believe it will win Best Pictures. Also, I have not watched any of the other movies listed. Not only did Black Panther include a great soundtrack, it included an attention-grabbing plot as well. The two factors are how I judge movies. I will make a note to watch the other movies, and maybe my nomination will change. Until then, Black Panther will have my vote.

  8. William Sutton says:

Many of these movies have had many great reviews and each in itself grossed a large amount of money. In my opinion the best movie was Black Panther. This movie was an action packed explosion of violence and drama that we have come to expect from Disney’s renditions of Marvel Movies. I personally loved the final battle between the two opposing black panthers on top of a train ( as most good action packed movie climaxes end up).

  9. Sophie Tipton says:

I have not seen any of these movies yet. Thank you money and school, but I really want to see all of them. From reviews and things that have been said about them, it seems that they all have a pretty good chance of winning, of course with how corrupt and politically sided Hollywood is, who even knows.

  10. Guillermo says:

The BlacKkKlansman should win. It addressed a real issue, racism, and told a tale about a man who strove to end racism by putting his life on the line. The story revolves around a black man who wants to be a policeman. When he enters, he says he could become an undercover agent, and after a while, he gets the idea to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. He uses a friend of his to cover for him at meetings (as he is visibly not the white man he said he was). In the end, they stop the bombing of a black activist meeting.

The movie ended with a note that our society still has racism in it, and is still scarred by its effects. In my opinion, social justice and equality should be standards our nation should be held to.

Although the time of the award show has come and gone, I am still desperate for blog responses and will respond to this one. Before googling which movie ended up winning the award, I made a prediction that Bohemian Rhapsody was going to win the award. It features one of the most popular bands of all time, a band that people of all ages can currently appreciate. Therefore, it is clear that Bohemian Rhapsody is going to steal the award.

  12. Collin Jeck says:

Although the time of The Oscars has come and gone, I am still desperate for blog responses and will still respond to a now irrelevant blog post. Before googling which movie actually received the award, I predicted that Bohemian Rhapsody would win. Although some unknown movie, Green Book, actually won, Bohemian Rhapsody was deserving of the Oscar. Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of one of the most popular bands of all time. A band that, to this day, is relevant in society. The band featured, Queen, is still popular to all generations, and the movie is of great quality, making it deserving of the award.

I initially thought that Black Panther would have won Best Picture. Black Panther instituted graphics that truly resonated with viewers. For weeks, they gushed over this movie, talking about the amazing cinematography and interesting plot. Some even went as far as dressing in African themed clothing to show their excitement and support for the film. I personally think the movie was fantastic and deserved to win. The pictures involved futuristic technology that drew viewers in with its whimsical appeal. Black Panther showed its significance through this technology, for nothing like this was seen in the competing films.

  14. Emma Jones says:

Black Panther should have won in my opinion. It is the only one of these movies that I’ve seen, so I am biased. However, based also off the sheer number of people I have encountered that also loved the movie, my opinion remains the same. Black Panther was an enjoyable movie. It had a great story, great graphics, futuristic technology, and a relevant theme. It was the catalyst for many great discussions. It should have won.

  15. Bubba says:

Based on brief glimpses of the movies above, for Best Pictures, I think A Star Is Born will win. A Star Is Born is a musical romantic film produced by Bradley Cooper. Not only is the cover the first thing that stood out to me when I looked at the list of nominees, A Star Is Born also has great cinematography, acting, and filming which ideally holds a spot for it for Best Pictures.
After looking up who had actually won, Green Book, I was a little disappointed. However, I can see why it could have won. A Star Is Born is still my pick, though.

  16. Samantha Holland says:

In my opinion, Black Panther was the one that should’ve taken the title, not Green Book. Black Panther was incredibly detailed and you could tell there was an extreme amount of work put into the film. Additionally, I believe the movie A Star is Born is a much better movie that is not sci-fi and would have been a better choice for the Best Picture award. It has a better plot line, and not to mention it has better overall reviews.
