Welcome to 2Q, Bloggers

Congratulations! You’ve made it through another challenging nine weeks at MSMS! Be proud. What you’re doing will prepare you for all kinds of success moving forward. Getting through the first nine weeks also means that you’re closer to one of my favorite seasons.

Not winter. (I really don’t like cold weather.)

Not Christmas. (Christmas can be fun, though!)

The legislative season. Mississippi’s regular legislative session convenes January 4. Look into your crystal balls and tell me what bills will receive the most attention. Feel free to tell me as well which topics should receive the most attention.

Given that teacher salary and public funding are still prevalent topics of discussion in legislative environments, bills that fall under education will continue to receive the most attention. Mississippi Senate bills such as these include SB2267 and SB2149.

  2. Everett “CJ” Mason, Jr. says:

With the current state of America and the two-party system ensuring that some large part of America will always be unsatisfied with those in charge, I feel that bills considering those issues will likely draw a lot of attention. Also, bills that deal with education and teacher pay will likely be considered a lot as well.

  3. Bill Arnoldus says:

According to ‘https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/5376’ Senate Bill H.R.5376 has received the most attention as of Sunday, November 28 2021. The Senate Bill addresses education, labor, child care, health care, taxes, immigration and the environment.
I don’t really care for politics so I can’t say what bill “should” receive the most attention.

  4. Dia Kher says:

Education in Mississippi has been a hottopic for a copious amount of years. There is no doubt that there will be bills over teacher salary. Mississippi Senate Bills similar to SB2305 will be discussed.

  5. Oliver Higginbotham says:

I have seen on the news that abortion rights are a big subject in the supreme court and I can see that dwindling down the court system to Mississippi state court overlooking its own abortion right laws. I also believe the education budget will have an overview. But only time will tell with these topics.

  6. Nora Courtney says:

I believe that laws over reproductive rights and taxation will receive the most attention, but bills that help improve education and bills that help diminish poverty levels should also be prioritized.

  7. Christina Zhang says:

Bills regarding reproductive rights will likely garner the most attention as it is not only a hot topic in Mississippi, but also the rest of the county. I believe it is fitting that this bill receives such attention, since the future of Roe v. Wade lies in the hands of these state-level bills. Other bills that should also receive plenty of attention are bills regarding COVID-19 in relation to our public school system: will we be having vaccine mandates? Mask mandates? Virtual schooling? Although these would be nice discussions to have in our government, it is likely that our legislature won’t propose any regulatory rules.

  8. Maurisha Arnold says:

Mississippi is clearly lacking in terms of education and bill SB2971 and others alike could help build that absence. It calls for an increase in funding for higher education and capital improvements. Bills like these could help create others that could better the future of Mississippi’s education system.

  9. Arika Gardner says:

I believe a new bill dealing with tax inflation will definitely receive a lot of attention. to good attention either. Bill that should get attention is the ones that help find low-income schools and a nationwide minimum wage increase. Too many jobs aren’t worth the hard work and pay too little to create a stable living of it alone.
